Mayoral Candidates' Platform:
MEGAN BARRY: “As Nashville continues to grow, it is critical that we keep our neighborhoods safe. While our crime rates have dropped in the last couple of years, we still have more to do for the safety of every neighborhood. As mayor, I will advocate for better relationships between police and communities, ensure that police officers reflect the diversity of Nashville, promote practices and policies that increase transparency and accountability, and make sure that police officers have the resources they need to keep us safe.” |

DAVID FOX:
"As mayor, David will work closely with law enforcement and the state legislature to make sure we get violent criminals off our streets and in jail for longer periods of time. The reality is that a small group of hardened, violent criminals are the root cause of the overwhelming majority of society’s worst crimes, and they need to be off the streets for good. If you talk to people in law enforcement, they’ll tell you the job is rewarding but stressful. Nashville must do well by these folks who risk their lives to keep our families safe. That means providing salaries that reflect the respect we have for what they do and health and worker’s compensation benefits that afford peace of mind in high-risk professions. These moves will make Nashville an employer of choice and will help attract and retain the best of the best to protect our communities. Let’s vow never to find ourselves in situations like we’ve seen recently in Baltimore, Chicago and Ferguson. The “Nashville Way” is to recruit, support and grow law enforcement and first-responder leaders from within our own community. Let’s start as early as middle school to provide promising students from every neighborhood the opportunity to explore law enforcement and criminal justice as possible careers. These young leaders can become the backbone of a system that protects and reflects our community and delivers public safety and justice for everyone." - Information taken from David Fox's campaign website |
BILL FREEMAN:
"I believe that every family and child has the right to feel safe, whether they are at home, at school, or going to work. Ensuring that the neighborhoods we love so much are safe is one of my top priorities. In order to do this, we need to:

HOWARD GENTRY:
"I’ll bring our advocacy groups, neighborhood associations, our faith community, foundations and public-private partnerships together to work with Metro Nashville Public Schools for outreach in our schools and communities. We need early intervention to break the cycle for domestic violence, drugs, gangs and all types of violence. Everyone must be around the table to ensure that this cycle of violence is broken. I will make it a priority for our police to have the latest technology to crack down on dangerous people. To protect both our police officers and our citizens, I’ll invest in body cameras for our officers. That technology makes it safer for everyone. We must be proactive to curb youth gun violence, implementing initiatives like Guns Down that are working throughout the nation. I will join Mayors Against Illegal Guns, and seek every avenue to empower our neighborhoods with interventions at the earliest stages to stop this violence. We can no longer allow illegal guns in our neighborhoods. We must help track these illegal weapons, take them off our streets, and hunt down the bad actors who deal in them so that our families are no longer their prey." |
JEREMY KANE:
“It is important that everyone in Nashville feels safe in their home and in our city. I will engage local, city, and state stakeholders to work to continue to decrease domestic violence and amplify a culture of accountability for acts of violence. There are a wide variety of nonprofits in Nashville that are working to end domestic violence and other forms of violence. I will make sure that they have a seat at the table and are given the resources to continue their work. Another step to making all of Nashville feel safe is to increase police officer accountability by funding body cameras for our officers. It is also crucial that we make sure we take care of our most vulnerable citizens, such as the elderly. As mayor I will make sure there is a rapid response team to help any senior in need and will work with the Defense Attorney’s office to eliminate elder abuse and fraud. I will also foster public safety through investing in roads, sidewalks and greenways, so that Nashvillians can feel safe in their own neighborhood.” |
LINDA ESKIND REBROVICK:
“Things are getting better, and crime is dropping thanks to the tireless efforts of our dedicated police officers and emergency personnel. Over the last five years, total crime dropped by 23%, while violent crime was reduced by 16%.We must continue our investment in public safety, which will allow for more improvements like the recently opened Midtown Hills Precinct. Steps like this get our police closer to the neighborhoods they serve, building trust and cooperation between officers and the community and creating a bulwark against neighborhood crime. To facilitate that trust we also need to implement an empowered civilian review board." |
